Heritage Valley Health System’s maternity classes are designed to meet the needs of the expectant mother, spouse or significant other, and family members. If you are expecting a baby, Heritage Valley Health System’s maternity classes can help you to prepare for a healthy pregnancy and delivery, a healthy baby and upcoming life changes. Classes are offered at Heritage Valley Beaver and Heritage Valley Sewickley.
Childbirth and Infant Care

Three-part or one-day class provides an overview of labor and delivery, anesthesia options, postpartum care, newborn care, safety and nutrition, along with a tour of the maternity center. No fee.
Lamaze Series
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Five-session class or two-part Saturday class taught by certified Lamaze instructor helps prepare mothers and their coaches to actively participate in pregnancy and delivery. Lamaze classes should be attended eight to 10 weeks prior to the expected delivery. A tour of the maternity center is included. A fee of $65 per couple is charged for Lamaze classes. Many health plans reimburse the fee.
Maternity Center Tours – No fee.

For expectant parents - Includes tour of birthing rooms, labor and delivery, the nursery and the post-partum unit.

For siblings - Specially designed presentation for siblings 3 years and older. Children see where mom will be after the baby is born, look at newborns in the nursery, and learn what infants are capable of doing. Sibling class held at Heritage Valley Sewickley only.

For Grandparents Only - Review current trends on childbirth, baby care and feeding, and safety features related to toys and cribs. Learn about the emotional aspects of grand parenting and how to be supportive to the new parents and grandchildren. Includes a tour of the maternity center. No fee. Held at Heritage Valley Sewickley only.

Breastfeeding for Moms-to-Be

A lactation (breastfeeding) consultant provides expectant mothers with guidelines for a successful breastfeeding experience. Topics include advantages of breastfeeding, body changes that occur during pregnancy and breastfeeding, recognizing if the baby is getting enough milk, what to do if problems arise, and more. A fee of $5.00 per class is charged.
