David G. Thimons, D.O., DirectorWith over 400 accredited family medicine residency programs in the United States, how can you select one that will best meet your needs? The Family Medicine Residency Program at Heritage Valley Beaver in Beaver, Pennsylvania provides a number of features to help you attain your career goals while also providing a pleasing living environment and access to cultural, educational and entertainment activities.

Accredited in 1979, the Heritage Valley Family Medicine Residency Program at Heritage Valley Beaver has graduated more than 140 residents. Currently, the Program is approved to accommodate six residents each year and is affiliated with the Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine in Hershey and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia. Heritage Valley Beaver is a progressive 361-bed facility with state-of-the-art technology, including cardiothoracic surgery. The program is unopposed and emphasizes procedural skills as well as extensive internal medicine and pediatric training. The residents experience the full spectrum of family medicine, including taking care of newborns and managing complicated patients in the intensive care unit. The hospital is located in a top-ranked community just 35 miles north of Pittsburgh and minutes away from the Pittsburgh International Airport. Heritage Valley Beaver offers excellent pay and benefits including generous health, life and disability insurance.

The outpatient training component of the program provides comprehensive medical care for many of the underserved patients in the region, exposing residents to exceptional training in ambulatory medicine. The broad inpatient experiences allow residents to feel confident practicing hospital medicine. Night call is a valuable learning experience but not so oppressive as to interfere with personal interests and pursuits. Because this is an unopposed program in a large and advanced health care facility, the residents never have to compete for patients, procedures or deliveries and have the ability to complete all rotations within the system.

Now is an exciting time to join the Heritage Valley Family Medicine Residency Program. Our residents are now practicing out of a newly built 13,000+ square foot, state-of-the-art Family Medicine Center. Additionally, Heritage Valley is in the process of implementing a complete electronic medical record for the entire health system. Our faculty is committed and enthused about training the next generation of family physicians. If you are interested in learning more about our residency program, I would enjoy the opportunity to speak with you.
