What is going on with The Emergency Department construction at Sewickley?

We are currently in Phase I of a three-phase construction process. Phase I includes a new Behavioral Health area, which features three seclusion rooms and a separate entrance. The entrance includes a covered walkway from the ambulance parking area, which will lead directly into the Behavioral Health Suite. In addition, there will be eleven (11) new exam rooms.

When is Phase I expected to be completed?

Phase I should be finished in early November 2008.

What happened to the staircase that used to be in the lobby?

The staircase was removed in order to provide sufficient room for the Emergency Department as well as to make sure that there was sufficient, accessible lobby space. The staircase is being replaced but will be located further back towards the Emergency Department in the old Registration area.

What is happening in the old Registration area?

The stairwell is being revised and will continue to provide access to the 4th floor. The terrazzo in front of the garage elevator is being installed.

What happens during Phase II?

Phase II will involve more treatment rooms, the building of the new nurse’s station, two new trauma rooms and the medication room. Phase II will also include a Digital Radiology room.

How will Phase II affect patient flow?

Our Registration and Triage area will remain open in its current location. Although some of our new patient rooms will be physically separated from the current workspace, we have worked with our management team to plan ahead for the proper flow of patients and placement to decrease any additional stress to our patients.

What is happening with the Ambulances that arrive to the Emergency Department?

Our current ambulance entrance is closed as part of Phase I of the renovation and will remain closed during Phase II. Ambulances are being redirected to the ambulatory entrance of the Emergency Department.

What happens to the current ambulance entrance?

We are excavating to place a decontamination tank underground. We are repaving and erecting a covered canopy for our ambulances to unload their patients so as to avoid the inclement weather. We are also constructing a covered walkway that will connect the ambulance entrance with the new Behavioral Health Suite.

What will the new treatment rooms look like?

All of our patient treatment rooms will be private rooms with new furnishing including new stretchers, flat-screen TV’s and built-in cabinetry.

Will the construction impact the holiday activities in the main lobby?

No, the lobby will remain open at all times during the renovation.

How long is the construction going to last?

We expect the project to be completed at the end of calendar year 2009.

What will happen to the memorial plaques on the current ED treatment rooms?

Engineering is securing all the memorial plaques and once the construction is complete, the plaques will be displayed in an appropriate area.
