First Walmart clinic in Pennsylvania to be owned, operated by Heritage Valley Convenient
Care; Clinic brings affordable healthcare to thousands of North Hills residents.
Moon Twp., PA – August 5, 2009 – Today, Walmart and Heritage Valley Health System announced the North Hill’s newest offering of healthcare services – “The Clinic at Walmart” operated by Heritage Valley ConvenientCare. The clinic will open August 31 in the Walmart store located at 20245 Route 19, Cranberry Twp., PA and provide fast, affordable access to basic healthcare services such as check-ups, immunizations, screenings and treatment of minor injuries. The walk-in health clinic is the first in a Pennsylvania Walmart, and the first to be owned and operated by Heritage Valley in a Pennsylvania Walmart. The clinic will be open for walk-in service Mondays–Saturdays 9am-9pm and Sundays 9am-5pm.
For busy customers who are seeking affordable, accessible healthcare, especially during evening hours or on weekends, the Clinics at Walmart play a key role today’s healthcare environment. These clinics can also help keep people out of overcrowded emergency rooms – 10 to 15 percent of clinic customers surveyed said they would have used an emergency room had the Clinic at Walmart not been available, while another 5 to 10 percent would have gone without treatment entirely, potentially leading to more serious complications down the road*.
“Walmart’s business model for its clinics allowed us the ability to bring our mission to improve the health and well-being of our communities right into their stores,” said Norm Mitry, President and CEO for Heritage Valley. “As the worldwide retail leader, Walmart also provides unprecedented exposure for Heritage Valley’s extensive network of healthcare services.”
Like Heritage Valley’s self-standing ConvenientCare Center in Beaver, the Clinic at Walmart will be staffed by Heritage Valley Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners and will be overseen by an offsite physician supervisor also employed by Heritage Valley. Referrals for more coordinated care will be made to Heritage Valley’s network of primary care physicians, satellite facilities or its two hospitals, Heritage Valley Beaver or Heritage Valley Sewickley, providing a better continuity of care. The clinic is designed to provide convenient, efficient and cost-effective healthcare access for consumers and will be connected to Heritage Valley’s electronic health record (EHR) and electronic prescription program. This system allows for automatic medical record delivery to Heritage Valley associated physicians, providing an unprecedented continuity of care for patients choosing this convenient, efficient and cost-effective alternative for the care of minor illnesses and injuries.
“We are constantly looking for ways to add value for our customers and, with this clinic, we hope to provide Cranberry and North Hills customers with affordable, accessible and convenient healthcare,” said Bruce Shepard, Walmart’s director of health business development. “And because Heritage Valley Health System is a well-known and respected healthcare provider in the community, our customers will benefit from the convenience of prompt, professional care from an organization that they know and trust.”
In addition to enhancing the ‘one-stop shopping’ experience for customers, The Clinic at Walmart offers prompt access to affordably priced acute and preventive care for common health ailments treatable without urgent or emergency care, including sore throats, sinus infections, upper respiratory infections, earaches, bladder infections, insect bites and stings, cholesterol screening, blood sugar testing, vaccinations, drug screening and routine physicals.
With the opening of this clinic, there will be 37 in-store clinics in Walmart stores across ten states. For further information about “The Clinics at Walmart”, please visit www.walmart.com/clinics.
* Survey results based on an exit survey of 14,479 patients following visits to a clinic in Walmart between January 2006 and November 2006. Surveys were conducted by the clinic operators.
