Moon Twp., PA (June 14, 2010) —Heritage Valley Sewickley School of Nursing’s Class of 2010 held commencement ceremonies on Sunday, June 13 at the Edgeworth Club. The ceremony featured keynote speaker Dr. Paul J. Friday, chief clinical psychologist at UPMC Shadyside.
Marilu Piotrowski, director, School of Nursing presented the students their nursing pins as Laura Vassamillet, the chairperson of the Heritage Valley Health System board of directors and Norman Mitry, Heritage Valley president and CEO, distributed the diplomas. The class of 2010 was presented by Rosemary Nolan, chief operating officer, and Dr. Allen Wolfert, president, Heritage Valley Sewickley medical staff, offered congratulatory remarks. The students were presented with the traditional graduate rose by Patricia Hefner, faculty member at the school.
Honors were given to various graduates during the ceremony. Alison Bergeson received the Faculty Award for the highest academic achievement with a 4.0 QPA. Amanda Burford was awarded the Ruth V. Myers Alumni Award for the greatest progress in the program while Katherine Arbuckle received the Flora Guthrie Applegate Award for outstanding nursing care.
There are forty-one students in the 2010 graduating class. The Heritage Valley Sewickley School of Nursing is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission. The program combines course credits from La Roche College with a wide range of clinical nursing courses, including experiences in medical-surgical, maternity, pediatric, critical care, surgery and recovery room, psychiatric, cardiology, oncology, mental health and rehabilitation nursing. Nursing courses begin in the first term of the full-time program. Credits are transferable to a BSN program providing students with educational mobility.
