Family Practice Residency
Applying to Our Program

It is the policy of the Family Medicine Residency Program (FMRP) to follow procedures for recruitment and appointment of residents in the FMRP which comply with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) educational qualifications and selection requirements. Eligible applicants will be selected on the basis of their preparedness and ability to benefit from the program, as well as aptitude, academic credentials, personal characteristics, and ability to communicate.
Eligibility Qualifications

  1. Applicants with one of the following qualifications meet ACGME educational qualifications and are eligible for appointment.
    1. Graduates of medical schools in the U.S. and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
    2. Graduates of medical schools in the U.S. and Canada accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
    3. Graduates of medical schools outside the U.S. and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
      1. Have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, or;
      2. Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction.
    4. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school (NOTE: A Fifth Pathway program is an academic year of supervised clinical education provided by an LCME-accredited medical school to students who meet the following conditions:
      1. Have completed, in an accredited college or university in the United States, undergraduate premedical education of the quality acceptable for matriculation in an accredited United States medical school;
      2. Have studied at a medical school outside the United Sates and Canada but listed in the World Health Organization Directory of Medical Schools;
      3. Have completed all of the formal requirements of the foreign medical school except internship and/or social service;
      4. Have attained a score satisfactory to the sponsoring medical school on a screening examination; and
      5. Have passed either the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination in the Medical Sciences, Parts I & II of the examination of the National Board of Medical Examiners, or Steps 1 and 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).
  2. Applications (For current matches, we are only accepting applications through ERAS. No paper applications are accepted, except after match.)
    1. All applicants to the program must complete and submit via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) to the program and the dean of their medical school:
      1. An application with photograph and personal statement
      2. A letter from the dean of their medical school
      3. Three letters of professional recommendation
      4. Transcript of grades
      5. Copies of Step I and Step II USMLE Scores (allopathic applicants); copies of COMLEX Level I and II Scores (osteopathic applicants)
    Confirmation of all of the above documents is conducted through your ERAS mailbox. It is your responsibility to monitor the submission of all necessary documentation. We realize that travel is expensive and time consuming; therefore, we prescreen all applicants before extending an invitation to interview.
    1. All applicants must be eligible for application for a Pennsylvania temporary license.

    The following criteria of the State Board of Medicine, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, must be met prior to entering a residency program in Pennsylvania in order to obtain a training license:

    1. Four academic years totaling at least 32 months and 4,000 hours of instruction in medical curriculum must be received during medical school. Regular attendance shall be verified. No credit will be given towards this requirement for instruction which was obtained in other than an accredited or unaccredited medical college, except for clinical rotations assigned under the auspices of the medical college in which the applicant was enrolled while he/she participated in the clinical rotations.
    2. You must have received 72 weeks of clinical rotations during your medical school training in an institution which has a graduate medical training program in the clinical area for which credit is sought, or, if the institution is not within the United States, is either a formal part of a medical college or has a formal affiliation with a medical college.
      1. U.S.-trained PGY-1 M.D. applicants must enter the National Residency Match to be considered for program admission, except those admitted as PGY-
      2. D.O. applicants may be considered for program admission through the National Residency Match or the D.O. Internship Match.
      3. Foreign-trained applicants may be considered for program admission if they fulfill all requirements as noted in “a” and “b” above.
      4. The program does not sponsor Visa’s.
      5. Must speak fluent English.
    3. Each applicant must have a personal interview which includes but is not limited to: hospital and Family Practice Center tour; rounding on the Internal Medicine Teaching Service; and, interviewing with the residency program director, various faculty members, chief resident, and other residents. The interview day runs from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
    4. Following admission to the program, all residents become resident members of the Department of Family Medicine of The Medical Center.

In addition to completing your ERAS application, you are also required to have a personal interview to meet with faculty and current residents. All applications must be received by December 31st in order to complete the interviewing process by January 31st. However, we urge you to submit your application by November 15 so that it receives the careful consideration it deserves. Interviews are conducted between mid-October and February. Candidates selected to interview will be notified in writing.

Complimentary hotel lodging and a resident-hosted meal for one night, followed by breakfast and lunch at the hospital the next day, are also provided. Spouses are welcome.

All candidates must have citizenship, permanent visa, or renewable work authorization. We are unable to sponsor H or J visas. US medical system experience is a true advantage including familiarity with US pharmaceutical and insurance systems. Application must show attempts to keep up with changes in medicine including CME courses if out of school more than five years.

All international medical graduates must have a valid ECFMG certificate to obtain an interview. Candidates who have completed the CSA or other skills assessment will have a slight advantage over those equivalent candidates who don’t. All documents must have certified translations if not in English. Letters of recommendation should be from physicians who know your professional skills, not just know you personally.

Observerships and externships are not available.

The Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency Program has received approval from the American Osteopathic Association to be an accredited site as an osteopathic combined internship/residency program. The Residency Program has partnered with the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine as an Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institution.
