James P. McKenna, M.D.
Director, Family Medicine Residency Program

James P. McKenna, M.D.Dr. McKenna graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. degree from the University of Maryland. He earned his medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 1980. He completed his family medicine residency at Malcolm Grow USAF Medical Center at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.

Dr. McKenna served in the U.S. Air Force from 1983 to 1987. From 1983 to 1985, he was a family physician at Mather USAF Hospital in Sacramento, California. He subsequently was a member of the family medicine faculty for two years at David Grant USAF Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base in California until 1987.

Dr. McKenna joined Heritage Valley Beaver’s Family Medicine Residency Program in 1987, and became the program director in 1994. He is the editor of and primary contributor to the Beaver Guide to Common Outpatient Problems, which is in its seventh edition. He is the primary author of numerous articles in the American Family Physician, and has published medical articles in the Journal of Family Practice, Post Graduate Medicine, Journal of the American Board of Family Practice, Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, and two primary care textbooks.

Dr. McKenna’s medical interests are smoking cessation, medical hypnosis, and depression in primary care. His hobbies include skiing, reading, pool, recreational sports, and spending time with his wife and two daughters.

Michael J. Speca, D.O.
Director, Osteopathic Medical Education

Michael J. Speca, D.O.Dr. Speca graduated from Washington and Jefferson College with a B.S. degree in Biology in 1995. He earned his medical degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1999, and completed his family medicine residency at Heritage Valey Beaver in 2002.

Following graduation, Dr. Speca entered private practice and the Family Medicine Residency Program faculty. He currently serves as the Director of Osteopathic Medical Education and advisor to osteopathic residents.

Dr. Speca enjoys golf, basketball, and spending time with his wife and three children. He currently serves as the Director of Osteopathic Medical Education and advisor to osteopathic residents.

Bruce N. Chamovitz, M.D.
Director, Internal Medicine Training

Bruce N. Chamovitz, M.D.Dr. Chamovitz graduated in 1973 from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.A. degree in English Literature. He earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1977 and completed his internal medicine internship and residency at the Oregon Health Science University (OHSU) in 1980. Following that, he completed a fellowship in infectious diseases at OHSU in 1982.

In 1982, Dr. Chamovitz began his tenure as the director of internal medicine training for Heritage Valley Beaver’s Family Medicine Residency Program. He is board-certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases.

Dr. Chamovitz served as president of Heritage Valley Beaver’s medical staff from 1995 to 1997.

His hobbies include scuba diving, golf, basketball, literature, horseback riding, and activities shared with his wife, son and daughter.

Kevin C. Dumpe, M.D.
Director of Ob/Gyn Training

Kevin C. Dumpe, M.D.Dr. Dumpe graduated with a B.A. degree in psychology from Allegheny College and earned his medical degree at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia. He completed his specialty training in Ob/Gyn at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh in 1986, where he served as chief resident.

Dr. Dumpe then served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force until 1990. While stationed at Griffiss Air Force Base in upstate New York, he served as chairman of the Ob/Gyn department and chief of surgical services. He was also certified as a flight surgeon during his military service.

He joined Heritage Valley Beaver’s family medicine residency program faculty in 1990 as director of Ob/Gyn training.

Dr. Dumpe is a member of the Christian Medical and Dental Society and the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He and his wife, a physician, have four children. Any extra time is spent pretending he is still an athlete.

Paul F. Bell, Ph.D.
Director, Behavioral Science Training

Paul F. Bell, Ph.D.Dr. Bell earned a B.A. degree in psychology from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, a M.S. degree in clinical psychology from Eastern Washington University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati in school psychology. Prior to joining Heritage Valley Beaver’s Family Medicine Residency Program, he worked as a school psychologist in an outpatient clinical setting.

Dr. Bell currently works as a full-time faculty member with the residency program, and works in private practice as a licensed psychologist specializing in treating children and adolescents. His research interests focus on psychological issues in family medicine.

His wife and two daughters contribute to his understanding of why family medicine is a worthy pursuit. His favorite recreational activities include tennis and skiing.

Allen H. Chamovitz, M.D.

Allen H. Chamovitz, M.DDr. Chamovitz earned his B.S. degree in psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1972. Six years later, he graduated from the medical school at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. Dr. Chamovitz completed a pediatric residency in 1981, and a fellowship in allergy and immunology in 1985, both at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

From 1992 to 1994, he completed Heritage Valley Beaver’s Family Medicine Residency Program. He then joined a private practice and the Family Medicine Residency Program faculty.

Dr. Chamovitz is married and has two sons. He enjoys golf, cross-country skiing, cooking and traveling.

Christopher M. Gehrlein, D.O.

Christopher M. Gehrlein, D.O.Dr. Gehrlein graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a B.A. degree in Psychology in 1997. He earned his medical degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2002 and completed his family medicine residency at Heritage Valley Beaver in 2005.

Following graduation, Dr. Gehrlein entered private practice and the Family Medicine Residency Program faculty.

Dr. Gehrlein is married to Dr. Haller. His interests include golf, biking, traveling, anything to do with Notre Dame athletics, and spending time with his wife and family.

Trista L. Haller, D.O.

Trista L. Haller, D.O.Dr. Haller graduated from Washington and Jefferson College with a B.A. degree in Molecular Biology in 1996. She earned her medical degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2002 and completed her family medicine residency at Heritage Valley Beaver in 2005. Dr. Haller served as the 2004-2005 Chief Resident of the Family Medicine Residency Program.

Following graduation, Dr. Haller entered private practice and the Family Medicine Residency Program faculty.

Dr. Haller is married to Dr. Gehrlein. Her interests include golf, travel, painting, horseback riding, reading fiction and spending time with her husband, family and friends.

Timothy L. Hedlund, D.O.

Timothy L. Hedlund, D.O.Dr. Hedlund graduated cum laude in 1989 from Alfred University with a B.A. degree in biology. He earned his medical degree from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri in 1993 and completed his family medicine residency at Heritage Valley Beaver.

Following graduation, Dr. Hedlund joined a private practice and the Family Medicine Residency Program faculty. He is on the Board of Directors of the Beaver County Medical Society and currently serves as the Chairman for Heritage Valley Beaver’s Department of Family Practice.

Dr. Hedlund enjoys golf, weight training and traveling with his wife, daughter and son.

David R. Jansma, M.D.

David R. Jansma, M.D.Dr. Jansma graduated with a B.S. degree in Biology from Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1984. He earned his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine and completed his family medicine residency at Heritage Valley Beaver.

Following graduation, Dr. Jansma entered private practice, then in 1991, he joined Heritage Valley Beaver’s Family Medicine Residency Program faculty.

Dr. Jansma is married and has a son. His special interest is wilderness medicine. He enjoys rock climbing, golf and reading novels.

James H. Lauer, M.D.

James H. Lauer, M.D.Dr. Lauer earned his B.A. degree in biology at Franklin and Marshall College and his medical degree from Georgetown University. He completed his residency in obstetrics/gynecology at Georgetown University Hospital.

Dr. Lauer served four years as an Ob/Gyn physician in the U.S. Air Force at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York. He served as chief of the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology and of Anesthesia Services.

He joined Heritage Valley Beaver’s Family Medicine Residency Program faculty in 1992. He also works with a private practice.

Dr. Lauer is married and has three children. His interests include computers, reading novels and golf.

NOTE: All faculty members practice with Center Medical Associates, Inc. family practice, except Dr. Paul Bell, who is in private practice with Beaver County Psychiatric Services.
