The Family Medicine Residency Program of Heritage Valley Beaver, is a busy 20+-year-old residency, with more than 14,000 outpatient visits at the Family Practice Center, 6,000 admissions to The Medical Center, and 200 deliveries each year.
Family medicine is the only residency program at The Medical Center, a 358-bed medical facility that is a member of the Heritage Valley Health System. The residency is community-based and affiliated with the Penn State University School of Medicine in Hershey and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Two-, four- and six-week clerkships in family medicine are available to students of AOA-or AMA-approved medical schools. Most students are third or fourth year; however, second-year students will be considered.
The clerkship consists primarily of an outpatient experience with senior residents and faculty at the Family Practice Center. Students have the opportunity to evaluate patients, formulate diagnoses and therapeutic plans, and participate in procedures under the direction of an attending physician. Students are encouraged to take a primary role with patients. They attend four morning lectures per week, occasionally make rounds with the family medicine inpatient service, and participate in hospital night call one night per week (Monday through Thursday only). Exposure to dietary, physical therapy, geriatrics, the prenatal clinic and a private family physician’s office is included.
Living accommodations for students are available. Food allowance in the hospital cafeteria is provided.
If you are interested in a clerkship, please write to James P. McKenna, M.D., Director, c/o Family Medicine Residency Program, 918 Third Avenue, Beaver Falls, PA 15010, or call him at 724-843-6007.
