Curriculum Overview
Accelerated 22-Month Program

Sewickley Valley HospitalThis program consists of college and nursing courses. Clinical experiences in acute care hospitals and long-term care facilities begin the first term of the first year. Mathematical skills for nurses, pharmacology, and legal, ethical and cultural considerations are integrated into all nursing courses. During the first year, the student learns basic nursing skills that are then added to in complexity and variety. Nursing skills include therapy and medication administration, as well as clinical experiences, including periooperative nursing, orthopedics, rehabilitation, home health, medical-surgical, cardiac telemetry and gerontology.

The second year of the program focuses on specialty areas. Acute, chronic and community clinical sites are used in maternity nursing, pediatrics, psychiatric/mental health, critical care and leadership courses.

Throughout the program, the student’s skills and clinical performance are assessed. Standardized testing and course examinations are also used to determine knowledge and understanding of theoretical and clinical content. College courses in natural and behavioral sciences and liberal arts are taught at Heritage Valley Sewickley School of Nursing by La Roche College faculty. The college courses are taught concurrently with the nursing courses as foundations for nursing theory. The seven college courses are: Anatomy & Physiology I & II; Microbiology; Nutrition; College Writing I; Introduction to Psychology; and Introduction to Sociology.
Progressive 33-Month Program

Students who wish to complete the program beginning on a part-time basis in the first year may complete the program in 33 months. The natural and behavioral sciences and liberal arts courses will generally be completed in the first year of study. The nursing courses will be introduced in the second year, and will be completed in the third year of study.
