Health Requirements

Prior to admission, each student is required to have a health examination .Prior to admission, each student is required to have a health examination comprised of a physical examination, lab work and required immunizations. The pre-admission health examination may be completed by a physician or certified nurse practitioner. The Heritage Valley Health System Lab at Heritage Valley Sewickley is recommended for lab work to facilitate processing to Employee Health Services (EHS).

Paperwork for immunization history, physical examination and lab work must be submitted to the Employee Health Services at Heritage Valley Sewickley no later than four (4) weeks prior to admission. The information will be reviewed and the student will be notified if any additional information and/or testing is required. Based on review of the information, the EHS may request periodic health updates while the student is in the program. Students who fail to provide a completed immunization record will not be permitted on the clinical unit. The various immunizations required are based on current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations for health care workers. Vaccines required include:

  • Tetanus booster (within 10 years)
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)—2 doses of live vaccine if born after 1956 or documented immunity by titer.
  • Polio
  • Varicella (Chicken Pox)—if no history of disease and/or negative titer.
