Temporary procedure performed to reduce the workload of the heart. Involves inserting balloon tipped catheter into a femoral artery. The tip of the catheter is then positioned in the descending aorta. The catheter is connected to a special machine that will coordinate inflation and deflation of the balloon with contractions of the heart. This action helps maintain the blood pressure and reduces the cardiac effort. The important benefit is that the heart can rest and requires less oxygen to function.
