The "Swan-Ganz" catheter is used to measure pressures within the heart and lungs. Also used to do "Cardiac Output" measurements (i.e.: Pumping efficiency) - Information obtained is used to evaluate efficiency of the ventricles and "opening size" of the valves within the heart. Procedure length of time is approximately 10 minutes. Usually the patient may eat and drink after the procedure, when awake.
