Emergency

Within Heritage Valley Health System, our two emergency departments – at Heritage Valley Beaver, and Heritage Valley Sewickley-- serve local residents who are critically ill or seriously injured.

Types of emergencies we treat are:

  • Heart attacks
  • Injuries from automobile accidents
  • Falls
  • Accidents that occur at home or at work, or with children at play
  • Poisoning
  • Burns
  • Emotional distress and
  • Injuries caused by violence.

Our emergency teams are made up of nurses, physicians and people who perform laboratory work and X-rays around the clock. We have 20 experienced full-time emergency physicians. Nearly all are board certified in emergency medicine.

Treatment

When you arrive at the emergency department, a member of our staff will evaluate your condition. Patients who are the most acutely ill and injured will be seen first.

For registration, you or your family member will need to give information about you, your doctor, employment and health insurance. Some types of health insurance require that you alert your primary care physician within a certain time frame that you were treated in the emergency department. A consent for care for children should be signed by a parent or legal guardian.

Every effort is made to provide prompt care. Other patients may be treated ahead of you because of their condition. Procedures such as X-rays and blood tests take time. The cooperation and patience of your loved ones are greatly appreciated.

If you are discharged from the emergency department, you will receive directions to continue your care. It is very important that you understand and follow these directions. If you don’t understand, ask!

If you are admitted to the hospital, your care will be continued on one of our inpatient units.

Patients should arrange for follow-up appointments as directed in their discharge instructions.

You will be billed for your emergency visit, and may also be charged for special services, physician services and supplies.

Express Emergency Care

Depending on your level of illness or injury, you may be seen in our Express Emergency Care or “fast track” system.

You will initially be seen by a physician assistant or nurse practitioner, who works in direct contact with our emergency physicians. You may also be seen briefly by one of our emergency physicians. Together, they provide the highest quality of care.

However, if you prefer to wait to be seen only by the emergency physician, your request will be respectfully honored.
