Seventy-six million Americans will experience dizziness or balance problems in their lifetime. Dizziness, vertigo and unsteadiness are symptoms associated with the human balance system. Human balance depends on information sent to the brain from the inner ear, the eyes, the muscles, skin and joints of the body. If the vestibular system located in the inner ear is damaged, the brain may receive incorrect information. The effect may include: dizziness, imbalance, a feeling that the room is spinning, nausea, lack of coordination, inability to walk straight, objects appear to jump, difficulty reading, embarrassment, depression, lack of self confidence.
Many of the symptoms experienced by people affected by inner ear problems can be difficult to describe and frightening. The individual may feel frustrated at the inability to accurately describe to the doctor and friends exactly what they are experiencing. When these symptoms are caused by an inner ear problem they are real and not imagined, and may benefit from Vestibular Therapy.
