How do I use the seat?
  • NEVER place an infant in the front seat directly behind an air bag. A child should also not sit in the front seat with an air bag. The safest place for a child is in the back seat.
  • Place the infant in the car seat and make sure the infant’s back is against the back of the car seat. Place rolled up diapers or blankets along your infant to make the seat fit better. See Figure 3.

Figure 3

  • Do not use thick padding between the baby and the car seat.
  • Designate a blanket to be used in the car seat so the shoulder straps can be placed through the blanket. This can be done by cutting small slits in the blanket so the straps will fit through. It is recommended that you reinforce the cuts to prevent tearing.
  • Avoid heavy or large bulky snowsuits because your baby can slip out of the harness. If you use a snowsuit, keep the suit open while you secure the harness, then close the suit and place a blanket over your baby if necessary.
  • Secure the harness straps so that they are snug against the baby. The straps should not be loose.
  • Check the shoulder harness for proper placement. It is to be at the lowest slot for infants and then adjusted for age.
  • To keep the strap from pulling out in a crash, be sure to put the end back through the side and pull tight. See Figure 4.

Figure 4

  • Place chest clip/harness evenly across the baby’s nipple line and make sure the seat belt is secure. See Figure 5.

Figure 5

  • If the lap portion of a combination lap/shoulder belt does not lock the seat firmly in place, you must use a locking clip to secure them together. See Figure 6.

Figure 6

  • If the seat belts are mounted on the door or if the car has automatic seat belts, do not place the infant in the front seat.
  • Any infant who is less than one year old should be placed in the back seat of the car, rear sitting position and the seat reclined at a 45° angle. See Figure 7.
  • An infant who is one year old and weighs more than 20 pounds should be placed in the back seat of the car, front sitting position and the seat in an upright position. See Figure 8.

  • The best placement of the infant in the car seat is in the middle of the back seat.
  • An adult should sit in the back seat with the infant when possible.
