Ataç Türkay, MD, PhD
Dr. Türkay earned his M.D. in 1984 from Ankara University Medical School in Ankara, Turkey. After serving as a general practitioner for two years in an underserved area of Turkey, he started his training in Internal Medicine at Gazi University Medical School, Ankara. While in training, he won the prestigious NATO Science Scholarship to pursue post-graduate studies abroad. He came to the US in 1988 and started his studies at The University of Michigan, Department of Human Genetics. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Human Genetics, and he was involved in both basic science research as well as clinical trials. While pursuing his post-graduate studies and research, Dr. Türkay completed his Internal Medicine training at Wayne State University-Detroit Medical Center. He did his Rheumatology training at the University of Michigan where he continued to serve as a lecturer. He accepted a position at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and moved to Pittsburgh in 2001. He worked as an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. Dr. Türkay moved to Heritage Valley Health System in 2004 to establish Heritage Valley Rheumatology. Since then, he has been delivering high-quality rheumatology care for our patients, bringing in his expertise as a physician-scientist. Under his guidance, Heritage Valley Rheumatology has grown steadily to provide services to patients from a large geographic area. Dr. Türkay is also involved in training our Family Practice residents, and his efforts have been recognized with the Teacher of The Year Award in 2011. His other awards include the prestigious American College of Rheumatology Fellow Award and William D. Robinson Fellow Award. Dr. Türkay has published in scientific and medical journals and served as a reviewer in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He is well recognized and respected by his peers in his field.
