Heritage Valley Health System announces the 2015 Cameos of Caring Awardees as Carrie Baker, RN, 5 South / Orthopedics Unit at Heritage Valley Sewickley and Patty Hazen, RN, Emergency Department at Heritage Valley Beaver.
The Cameos of Caring Award honors exceptional bedside nurses who work in acute care hospitals. Recipients must demonstrate a commitment to consistent, evidenced based clinical decision-making and excellence in nursing care; serve as an effective advocate for patients and their families; encourage and motivate others, and be recognized as a role model for the profession of nursing; practice nursing involving direct patient care; be a licensed RN and be a direct employee of the hospital.
Carrie Baker, RN, graduated from the Heritage Valley Sewickley School of Nursing in 2005. She is currently a Registered Nurse on the 5 South / Orthopedic Unit at Heritage Valley Sewickley. When Carrie was in nursing school she began to realize that she was guided into the career of nursing to fulfill the desire she had to help others. Currently, she teaches the joint replacement classes held for patients at the hospital and enjoys easing the minds of patients coming for their procedures. As an advocate for the nursing profession, Carrie leads by example. She participates on committees and attends seminars to continue with her education and learn new ways to approach ongoing challenges.
“Coming to work often feels like visiting family,” Carrie said. “We help each other and make helping others feel even more rewarding.”
Patricia Hazen, RN graduated from Jameson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1980 and is a registered nurse in the Emergency Department at Heritage Valley Beaver. Patty’s desire to care, listen and comfort others fueled her desire to become a nurse. In the Emergency Department where she works, every day is a new day. Patty knows that she can not only provide clinical expertise, but also emotional healing to patients and families in distress. Patty is a preceptor in the department and gets enjoyment working side by side new nurses, watching them become confident in their new role. She knows that nursing is a profession that embraces continuous learning.
“There is no greater feeling than being part of a team that cares for patients that arrive in our department hurt and frightened, “ said Patty. “We personally make a difference.”
“Heritage Valley is fortunate to have highly skilled and dedicated nurses at all of our locations,” said Linda Homyk, MSN, RN, vice president and chief nursing officer, patient care services at Heritage Valley Health System. “Carrie and Patty are excellent nurses who are committed to patient care and promoting the nursing profession. We’re proud to have them as Cameos of Caring awardees this year.”
Carrie and Patty will be honored at the 17th Annual Cameos of Caring Awards Gala on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
