Heritage Valley WoundCare Accredited by Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society

Heritage Valley becomes the only UHMS Accredited Hyperbaric Center in western Pennsylvania.

Heritage Valley WoundCare and Hyperbaric Medicine has received accreditation by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) for demonstrating commitment to patient care and facility safety in clinical hyperbaric medicine.

“We’re proud to become the first and only hyperbaric center in western Pennsylvania to receive UHMS accreditation,” said Norm Mitry, president and CEO, Heritage Valley Health System. “This accreditation is an example of the expert care that Heritage Valley brings to the community. It’s an indication that you don’t have to travel far for the best care.”

Heritage Valley Health System underwent a rigorous application and review process to receive accreditation. UHMS sent a team of experts to Heritage Valley to examine staffing and training, equipment installation, operation and maintenance, facility and patient safety, and standards of care. The UHMS seal of approval indicates that the facility meets the high performance standards required for accreditation.

Heritage Valley WoundCare opened in 2009 and has grown to include two hyperbaric oxygen chambers used in advanced wound care as well as other clinical areas. Thomas Michael, MD, CWSP, is the medical director and certified by the American Board of Wound Management. He and the WoundCare staff work with a multidisciplinary team of specialists to provide personalized treatment plans for each patient.

“Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a unique treatment that can benefit patients with a multitude of conditions,” said Dr. Michael. “Although a primary use is the treatment of hard to heal wounds, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used to treat intestinal, bladder, skin and jaw problems caused by radiation treatments. We collaborate with physicians in a variety of specialty areas to provide the best treatment to patients.”
