Medtronic PulseSelect™ Pulsed Field Ablation for Treatment of AFib
The Medtronic PulseSelect™ Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) is an innovative minimally-invasive technology that uses pulsed electric fields to treat atrial fibrillation (AFib). The Medtronic PulseSelect™ PFA System is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of patients with intermittent or persistent Atrial Fibrillation.
Atrial Fibrillation is one of the most common and undertreated heart rhythm disorders, affecting millions of people worldwide. AFib is an irregular heart rhythm that affects the upper chambers (atria) of the heart. This arrhythmia prevents blood from being pumped efficiently to the rest of your body. As a result, AFib may impact your ability to perform daily activities, cause you to feel tired and impact your overall quality of life. If left untreated, AFib could lead to stroke or heart failure.
AFib ablation, a minimally invasive procedure that uses hot or cold energy to create scars in your heart tissue where the arrhythmia (or irregular/abnormal heart rhythm) is occurring, is often used to treat patients with AFib. PFA is a breakthrough ablation technology that uses pulsed electric fields, rather than temperature extremes, to achieve the same therapeutic effect yet better protect surrounding tissue. The PulseSelect™ PFA system delivers the pulsed electric fields through an ablation catheter designed specifically to interrupt irregular electrical pathways in the heart that trigger AFib.
If you or someone you know has AFib, talk to your physician to see if the PulseSelect™ Pulsed Field Ablation System may be an option.
Contraindications:
The PulseSelect PFA loop catheter is contraindicated for use in patients with the following conditions:
- Active systemic infections
- A known sensitivity to Heparin
- Blood clotting abnormalities
- Permanently implanted metallic objects in the left atrium
