Heritage Valley Health System announced a student affiliation agreement
with Duquesne University’s John G. Rangos Sr. School of Health Sciences and
Mylan School of Pharmacy. The two organizations said the affiliation will
promote collaboration in clinical care, research and medical education.
“This
is a great step forward in establishing quality clinical education opportunities
for our students,” said Duquesne’s provost, Dr. Timothy Austin. “Heritage
Valley is our first ‘preferred partner’ of this kind.”
Heritage
Valley Health System President and CEO Norm Mitry added, “We are honored and
pleased to have this preferred relationship with such a highly respected University,
and see this affiliation benefiting both organizations. For those students
involved, they will gain ‘hands on’ practical experience to complement
their classroom studies.”
For the Mylan School of Pharmacy,
the agreement will enable students to learn a broad spectrum of skills and competencies
while at the pharmacies located inside Heritage Valley Beaver and Heritage Valley
Sewickley, including dispensing of medications, pharmacy management, drug information
and patient focused care.
For the Rangos School of Health Sciences,
students studying physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech language pathology,
will be placed into inpatient acute areas at Heritage Valley’s two hospital
campuses, Heritage Valley Sewickley and Heritage Valley Beaver as well as several
Heritage Valley Rehab outpatient locations.
“Our agreement was
tailored to the needs of students and the attributes of the Heritage Valley Health
System,” said Dr. Greg Frazer, dean of the Rangos School of Health Sciences.
“This agreement and the collaborative teaching that goes on are critically
important to these students’ educational experience. From a quality
point of view, the collaboration is overseen by the credentialing bodies over health
sciences and pharmacy education.”
